SAT Subject Test - Math Level 1

The SAT offers 20 different subject tests in addition to the general SAT exam. These subject tests are offered as a way of demonstrating a student’s proficiency in a specific area of academia and are taken by students depending on their various interests. Colleges could possibly recommend one or multiple tests and some may require a specific test as part of their program prerequisites. It is recommended to take these tests only if you have taken, or are currently taking, courses in the respective subject area. It is also recommended that non-native speakers of the English language take one or more of the subject tests depending on the program in which they wish to apply. This allows ESL and international students the opportunity to perform well in subjects that may not fall under the general content of the SAT. Homeschooled students may be recommended to take one or more subject tests so colleges have additional information pertaining to the skills and knowledge they learned outside of the traditional classroom setting.

The subject tests consist of multiple-choice questions and students are allowed one hour per subject test, up to a maximum of three tests per day. For more general information about SAT Subject Tests, click here.

The SAT Subject Test in Mathematics can be taken as either a Level 1 or Level 2 test. The Math Level 1 test will assess the skills a student has acquired throughout high school, primarily in the areas of algebra and geometry. This subject test is recommended for students interested in pursuing degrees in science, technology, and engineering, to name a few. The test is offered in January, May, June, October, November, and December of each year. A calculator is permitted at the testing center, but must fall within accepted guidelines. The SAT calculator policy is found here. There are 50 multiple-choice questions on the test and students are allowed 60 minutes to complete the entire exam. An understanding of the following skills is important for students who choose to take the SAT Subject Test in Mathematics- Level 1: Number and Operations, Algebra, Statistics, Probability, Geometry, and Trigonometry.

In the Number and Operations category, students should be familiar with concepts such as ratio and proportion, elementary number theory, complex numbers, and sequences. As for the Algebra category, students should be skilled at expressions, inequalities, and properties of functions. For Geometry and Measurement, students should have a solid understanding of lines, symmetry, surface area, volume, and trigonometry. The Data Analysis subsection contains information about graphs, plots, linear regression, and probability.

While there is a bit of overlap within areas of the SAT Subject Test in Mathematics between Level 1and Level 2, it is important to choose the test that covers math topics the student has recently learned. The following contains a short breakdown of what Level I entails:

Number and Operations - Level 1 assesses a more basic understanding of the concepts.

Algebra and Functions - The algebraic equations in Level 1 are less complex. Level 1 excludes equations related to exponents and trigonometry.

Geometry - There is a large portion of plane Euclidean geometry in Level 1. Trigonometry questions are fundamental and normally concern sine, cosine, and tangent.

Statistics - Level 1 includes mean, median, range, probability, mode, and interpretation of data.

If a student is unsure which test would be more applicable, they should inquire of their teacher. Students registered for Level 2 may choose to take Level 1 on test day if they so desire.
