SAT Subject Test - World History

The SAT offers 20 different subject tests in addition to the general SAT exam. These subject tests are offered as a way to demonstrate a student’s proficiency in a specific area of academia and are taken by students depending on their various interests. Colleges could possibly recommend one or multiple tests and some may require a specific test as part of their program prerequisites. It is recommended to take these tests only if you have taken, or are currently taking, courses in the respective subject area. It is also recommended that non-native speakers of the English language take one or more of the subject tests depending on the program in which they wish to apply. This allows ESL and international students the opportunity to perform well in subjects that may not fall under the general content of the SAT. Homeschooled students may be recommended to take one or more subject tests so colleges have additional information pertaining to the skills and knowledge they learned outside of the traditional classroom setting.

The subject tests consist of multiple-choice questions and students are allowed one hour per subject test, up to a maximum of three tests per day. For more general information about SAT Subject Tests, click here.

The SAT Subject Test in World History offers an opportunity for students to demonstrate expertise in this particular subject area. The test encompasses all themes of a historical nature from ancient history to the present day including: political, diplomatic, cultural, social, economic, and intellectual. It is offered in June and December of each year and is comprised of 95 multiple-choice questions. Students have 60 minutes to complete the entire exam.

To perform well on this assessment, it is recommended that students have already taken at least one year of college-preparatory level World History. They should also read independently to learn more about topics that could be presented on the test. It would be helpful to review World History texts for a fresh understanding of various time periods in history and the chronological order in which these events occurred.

Students should be familiar with cause and effect relationships, geographical information, and history-related terminology. They should understand the concepts required for analysis of historical events and have the ability to use this analysis further by deciphering maps or charts as presented. The test consists of both chronological and geographical information. Below is a breakdown of each category:

Chronological: Civilizations to the Common Era (C.E.) year 500

                         500-1500 C.E.

                         1500-1900 C.E.

                         Post-1900 C.E.

                         Cross-chronological events

Geographical: Global, Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia, South & Southeast Asia, East Asia,

                        Americas (Not United States)

It is important to note that the SAT Subject Test in World History does not use the chronological terms B.C. (before Christ) and A.D. (anno Domini); rather, they choose to use the terms B.C.E. (before Common Era) and C.E. (Common Era).
