Dentistry is the branch of the healing arts and sciences devoted to maintaining the health of the teeth, gums, and other hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity and adjacent structures. We welcome any queries, multiple choice questions, essay type questions, or topic presentations questions. We have experts in the field waiting to do their best to provide you relevant and authentic answers.
We divide the whole of dentistry into two main categories: clinical and basic dentistry.
CLINICAL DENTISTRY
PROSTHODONTICS Is is the area of dentistry pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of the oral function, esthetics, and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing teeth, deficient teeth, and/or compromised maxillo-facial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. A full list of dental terminology can be found in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.
ORTHODONTICS is the branch of dentistry concerned with prevention, interception and correction of malocclusion and other abnormalities of dentofacial region. For further reading on orthodontics, we recommend a downloadable book: Orthodontics: The Art and Science.
PERIODONTICS is the speciality of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes; the maintenance of the health, function and esthetics of these structures and tissues; and the replacement of lost teeth and supporting structures by grafting or implantation of natural and synthetic devices and materials. A glossary of periodontal terms is available from The American Academy of Periodontology.
ENDODONTICS is the branch of dentistry which is concerned with the morphology, physiology and pathology of the human dental pulp and periradicular tissues. Its study and practice encompass the basic clinical sciences including biology of the normal pulp, the etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries of the pulp and associated periradicular conditions. The American Association of Endodontics has produced an excellent guide to clinical endodontics.
BASIC DENTISTRY

ORAL MEDICINE is the speciality within dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis and management of complex diagnostic and medical disorders affecting the mouth and jaws. An excellent starting point in the study of oral medicine is Burket's Oral Medicine.
DENTAL MATERIALS relates to the various materials used in dentistry for permanent and temporary restorations, for impression taking etc.
ORAL ANATOMY AND HISTOLOGY is comprised of anatomic, morphologic, histologic and developmental features of oral hard and soft tissues.
